First Spiritual Exercises - Inner Peace In Friendship with Jesus - Chapel Hill

FSE ChapelHill

FSE ChapelHill2

The Retreat:

How often, when asked how I know something or how I got through a particular situation, do I say, “I have a friend who ...” This retreat draws on the very ordinary but life-changing experiences of friendship. During it I will experience how Jesus befriends me and others, and how our lives can be changed. Indeed, this retreat is not just about the imitation of Christ but also about a friendship born of two people having the same desires and working together.

This retreat is for anyone who desires to grow in their relationship with God.

It is described as a retreat in daily life. The retreat guides you in daily prayer through four weeks, includes a weekend exercise and Sunday Worship. Each prayer day includes a time of prayer, and reflection after prayer. Together they add up to a daily commitment of 30-50 minutes.

The Process

  • This is both an individual and group prayer experience.
  • Participants pray at home for at least half an hour each day, and meet together with the retreat guides in the group once a week, for 1.5 hours, for listening, prayer and spiritual conversation.
  • There are five 1.5 hour group meetings. The final meeting will
conclude with Holy Communion and supper.
  • Individual prayer is guided by a prayer handbook, The First
Spiritual Exercises: Four Guided Retreats, by Michael Hansen, S.J.

Your Commitment

  • Spend 30-50 minutes daily in personal prayer.
  • Keep a journal.
  • Commit to four weeks of the retreat and attend five
    weekly group meetings.
  • Participate in group sharing and spiritual conversation.
